Best Timing for Your Lawn in Atlantic Canada

To get the most out of your lawn care, timing is everything. In our Atlantic climate, the windows for success are narrow, so we recommend focusing on the Spring (late May to early June) and Fall (late August to mid-September) for the best results.

When to Fertilize

The best time to fertilize is when the grass is actively growing. In the Spring, wait until the soil has warmed up to at least 10 degrees (usually late May) so the roots can actually absorb the nutrients. In the Fall, fertilizing in September or early October is critical; it strengthens the root system and provides the food your lawn needs to survive the long winter and green up faster next year.

When to Overseed

Overseeding is most effective when the weather is mild and moisture is consistent. Late August to mid-September is the "gold standard" window in Atlantic Canada because the warm soil triggers fast germination while the cool nights prevent the new sprouts from drying out. If you prefer to seed in the Spring, wait until the risk of a hard frost has passed and the ground is no longer soggy to avoid seed rot.
